I’ve gotten behind again, so it’s catch up time. Laura and I have a tradition of going to Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge on Christmas Day. You would be surprised at how many cars are visiting the refuge on Christmas Day!
The weather was perfect. The fog burned off and the sun sort of came out. At least there was enough contrast for my camera and lens (Which only extends to 300 mm.) to get birds in focus. Here’s a sampling.

I’m not a true bird photographer, but I do like my yearly jaunt with Laura. Take care everyone!
It looks like a fun place to hike and birdwatch. Nice photos Anne.

Thanks Brad! No hiking here. It’s an auto tour and we can’t get out of the car. We roll down the windows and do the best we can. This rule stands so we don’t disturb the bird’s habitat. Half way around the route, there is a place where we can park and get out, but that’s it.

Wow! What a joy to see so many beautiful images. You got pretty close to some of those birds. Fantastic!

Thanks Egidio! Actually I didn’t get close at all. I had my lens extended out to 300 mm and cropped the picture in–a lot. I came home with 400 shots and only 19 were good enough. But it was a fun day.

I was surprised that 300 mm enabled you to get close and excellent shots. Sometimes I wish I had a 600 mm, but I can’t justify one for sporadic moments in bird photography. You had a lot of fun!

I think they are lovely shots. I find a camera works far better than binoculars.

What a lovely Christmas tradition! We never get further than our local park 😆 And you have some great bird photos here. I especially love the egret in #12 and the pretty bird (not sure what it is) in #5.

Thanks Sarah! We enjoy our yearly outing, but have to tote our own lunch. Not too many places open on Christmas Day!

Awesome 😀! The last time I went to such a sanctuary was in Jan 2023, in India. But my camera didn’t support me in my endeavors to get some good shots 😕.

Thanks PR! I’m sorry you weren’t able to get the results you wanted when you visited your sanctuary. I’m not a true bird photographer. Buildings don’t move!!

What a peaceful place to be on Christmas Day. Before or after lunch, Anne? Walking it off, I suspect. Good idea!

Before, during and after lunch. We were doing car tours because walking would disturb the birds’ habitat. I always bring a snack, we stopped at a Starbucks for a late lunch.
