When I’m out with my camera, I see and notice things differently. I mentally compose the picture even before I pick up my camera. So, I really don’t pay much attention to the rules and tools of composition. I do believe I needed John’s challenge today. He has me thinking of how and why I do things regarding composing a picture.

Mostly I look for shape and texture. I do love texture. Anything wood is texture whether it’s a tree, a fallen tree or a barn made from a tree.

Actually, everywhere you look you’ll find shape, form and texture. We can build stores, machines and buildings that show off shape, form and texture.

Rectangles and circles

Squares, triangles and rectangles

Triangle and half circle

Nature’s perfect circles

And my favorite, nature’s freeform.

The next time I take my camera out, I will be more aware thanks to John’s challenge. Thanks John! When you respond, please link to John’s post and use the Lens-Artist tag. I totally enjoyed window shopping with you and Ritva last week. Next week Ann-Christine will be presenting our challenge so look for her post.

We are having blizzard conditions in the Northern California foothills. The Sierra Nevada Mountains are a beautiful white. My children live in Reno and are getting a lot of snow also. We are okay with just a lot of rain and wind here in Sacramento. Take care everyone.

  1. Anne, I’m just like you when I photograph. I see something I like and I photograph it. I do not think about rules of composition, and yet, they are present. Your photos are beautiful and show precisely that.

    1. Thanks Leanne! I remember our day on the coast when you were visiting. You would just walk up, compose and create a beautiful image. I think I’m there now. Thanks for being my role model.

  2. Instinct plays a big part in photography, I think. We might not think about some things but they are there as you show in your fantastic photos, Anne. I simply love your trees, the texture and shapes are brilliant.

  3. I love the way you presented this Anne. A beautiful look through your lens. It is amazing to think how we do use the tools even if we don’t realize it. I loved your nature’s freeform, made especially for those who love it all!!!

  4. I love your tree textures and the sunflowers in particular 🙂 Coincidentally, I’m going to be hosting Monochrome Madness on Wednesday with a theme of texture so if you’re up for converting those trees (or any other shots) to B&W it would be great to see them!

    1. Thanks Sarah! I will try to remember on Wednesday. I’m still suffering with Chronic Fatigue from my August auto accident. It’s just been difficult to keep up with normal things.

  5. Your comments about shape and texture remind of an artist who said that shapes are what create the world of painting. Like you, I enjoy texture and the shapes of the world around me and when out with a camera, my viewpoint of the world changes even before I take a picture. It is because of having the camera in hand that I look a bit more closely.

Your photos show your perspective so well! Curves, lines, color, texture. Altogether, your point is well made here.

  6. Loved your post this week Anne – the sunflowers which are everyone’s favorites I think (including mine) and that bizarre rooftop which is great! Also loved your wood textures – also a favorite subject of mine. I do believe we photographers see the world differently, which is one of its many gifts! Excellent choices.

  8. Beautiful and striking images, Anne. Your texture photos (the trees) are terrific. I had to smile at the tractors. You’re absolutely right. Textures are all around us. I am especially drawn to the sunflowers, which are also great examples of form and texture.
