Composition is something I am careful about, and I very seldom choose symmetry as a first choice. However there are times that a scene just cries out symmetry, and then I just take advantage of it. Sofia has chosen symmetry as this week’s challenge. In my mind, I remembered memorable symmetrical pictures over the years, but could I find them?? Absolutely not! So you’ll have to view what I did find.
Let’s start with some images that contain very symmetrical pieces. (Explanations are in the captions.)

How about bridges.

Water helps create symmetry through mirror images.

I’ll end with some miscellaneous images.

Some day I’ll find those pictures I wanted to show you. Look for a regular post of mine. In the meantime, when you post your pictures for this challenge be sure to link to Sofia’s original post and use the Lens-Artists tag. Last week I enjoyed seeing all your billboards and signs–some were very clever. Next week Donna is going to challenge us with asymmetry! Be sure to look for her post.
I think you did a job rounding up those photos, Anne. I saw the Seafarers Bridge and thought that looked Melbourney. I really like the Fort Point doorways photo. So effective.

These are all wonderfully effective. I’m rather drawn to the lavender field. A clever shot.

Wonderful choices Anne – your banner image is astounding! Do you remember what lens you used to get the entire scene? Also loved the bridges, especially Seafarers

Thanks Tine! The lens must have been my 18 -55 mm. I don’t think I had the Tamron at that time. This was shot in a winery tasting room. It was empty and I had to walk back to get the entire stained glass. I cropped it in post. I just love Fuji and their lenses.

Lovely collection to demonstrate symmetry, Anne! I love taking pics of bridges for this reason. I agree with you about composition leaning toward asymmetry as a choice, too. Reflections always make for interesting symmetry!

Thanks Terri! My friend and I had a small part-time business doing marketing collateral. I was the writer and she did the design. I learned a lot from her. Basically, not to design a flyer where everything is centered down the middle. I guess I transferred to my photography.

If this is not what you wanted to show us, Anne… they are amazing! I love your bridges and your reflections, my guess is that the tree photo is only the reflection… The stained glass is my favourite, beautiful photo.

Thanks Sofia! The bridge in the Japanese Garden is also a reflection. I like it because the bridge is red. My new used car is named red even though it’s silver!

oh, how I loved your bridges and reflections. A grand look at symmetry. the lavender field was a creative find! Well done. And I think my favorite is the barbed wire. It is both creative and interesting a shows how symmetry can be found…in the most unlikely places. Always nice choices from you, Anne.

Great examples, Anne! I’m afraid you’re going to accuse me of copying a couple of your designs in my photos. I swear I wrote my post on Sunday well before I saw your post. It will publish tomorrow… >grin<
Of course, I love the two black-and-whites, the doorways and the Melbourne Bridge best.

Well, I loved all these and I don’t think I could love the ones you sought for any more! The bridges are beautiful and the reflections! But still – the lavender field is the one I had to return to more than twice. It is such a creative and unusual choice.

I liked the structure in your Fort Point picture and the lack of structure in the lavender field. Symmetry takes many forms.
