When it come to being entertained at the zoo, the giraffes provide it, especially when there’s a young one in the enclosure. Sumi is about 4 months old (I think) and is so cute. At a recent visit, she was doing something peculiar–gnawing on her mother’s ossicones! At least I think that’s her mom who is lying down. Who else would put up with that! I’ve also included some other pictures to give perspective on Sumi’s size.

A close relative to the giraffe is the Okapi. They also have ossicones but their rear ends have amazing patterns.

While their patterns are beautiful, they are not as much fun to watch as the giraffes.
My other favorite animals are the orangutans, but they weren’t out when I visited. Maybe next time.
That’s it for the zoo today.
What’s not to love about giraffe watching. Gorgeous photos and an okapi too.

I agree Jo, but I don’t know why she just didn’t get up! I didn’t hear a sound from either of them. But then, I’ve never heard a sound from any of the giraffes.

I‘ve never seen an okapi before in real life. 👍👍👍

They are really pretty Andre. Our small zoo has three of them and a baby.

Such interesting behavior from the juvenile giraffe. As for the okapi, I had never seen one. Indeed their rear ends show beautiful patterns. Thanks for sharing this beautiful gallery.

That baby giraffe is definitely one of the cutest at the zoo. I love the way she seems to be cuddling up to her mother’s neck. Great series of images.
I think your local zoo, if you live close, is one of the best day’s outings any nature photographer can practice at, let alone of great interest to those of us who can’t travel and see these animals, birds and reptiles in their own environment.
My favourite area is always the primates.

I like our local zoo. It’s a half hour away or less depending on traffic. It’s small enough to get to know all the animals, and walk through it in 1 1/2 hours. Of course, we don’t have large animals like elephants, but we do have J. Gregory, the white rhino! The primates are fun to watch and listen to as some squeal when they are playing.

Indeed you caught a lot of interesting action with the giraffes. I was also quite stunned by the colours of the Okapi the first time I saw one.

The giraffes are always fun to watch. The Okapi is beautiful, but a bit more shy than the giraffe.

Giraffes are hard to photograph I think. I went on a tour here and was told they don’t really sit in the wild because it is too hard for them to get up. These are great Anne.
