Actually, I’ve renamed this area of Sacramento Morristown! Yesterday afternoon, I went along with Photo buddy Greg Morris to shoot some of the wall murals. As a former resident, he knows the area well and is always discovering new places to shoot. I had a lot of fun seeing awesome murals, old buildings and decay.
There are a lot of stories to be told in Midtown: the art, the people and the structures all give you an inkling of how people live there. Withing a few blocks you can go from decaying buildings to upscale eateries and shops. Well, I’d better let the images tell you more. This will probably be a three part post. I’ll begin with a couple of murals and people.
Murals are found in alleys and this was our first stop. This one is showing its age, but it is still vibrant.
This woman was walking by and stopped to talk, so I asked her if I could take her picture. She was excited that I asked.
A while later, this woman walked by and didn’t take time to say “Hi.” I took her picture anyway!
I was amazed at how they just painted over the window.
Up close you can see how wall cracks and time are fading the black.
I think the “USA” and “?” were added by someone other than the artist.
In that same alley were some examples of metal art. This is a peacock made from old saw blades.
A closer look.
A side view. Look at the parts used for the bird’s face!
This fence had some interesting iron work.
Here is the sculpture. The day was cloudy, but you can see some blue sky.
This street musician was eager to oblige me and my camera. He also had Greg take his photo.
This sculpture was on a building roof top. I was lucky to have more blue in the sky. I think it made for a nice contrast with the metal sculpture.
This is another alley. I was told that the graffitti in the center was added by someone other than the artist. This came from a street artist, but he didn’t do this mural.
I really liked the look of this store. I didn’t notice the hands on the roof until I started processing the image.
Graffitti is everywhere in the alleys. You’ll see why I took a shot of this sign when you look at the last photo.
This was next to the trash can in the previous shot!
