Happy pre-Thanksgiving to all who celebrate! There’s a new animal at the Sacramento Zoo: meet the White Rhinoceros. That’s his keeper behind the fence. She just kept feeding him. I wonder how much he eats in a day! He’s a big guy!

An orangutan was enjoying a snack of romaine lettuce.

The alligator was patiently waiting.

This meercat was the lookout guard at the top of the small mountain.

This raven (I think) caught its meal.

One of the cheetahs posed for me.

The flamingos are back. They are being housed in the former enclosure of the chimpanzees after they were sent to different zoos that had more space for them in a jungle like enclosure. The flamingos are still kept in a glass enclosure because of the avian flu.

What was this zebra trying to tell me?

These are the changes at the zoo. They are planning a move to Elk Grove in a much better location with more space for more animals. It will take about 4 to 5 years. So stay tuned.
The San Diego Zoo was all abuzz last week about the possible return of the Giant Pandas.

Geez, don’t they eat a lot! I really liked these wildlife photos, especially the lines in the zebra. The pink flamingos are gorgeous!

Thanks, Egidio! I liked that the zebra had his back to me and the hair on its neck was standing up. The flamingos are always great. I can’t wait for them to get back into their normal habitat.

The Orangutan looks so peaceful! I love seeing animals who are eating their food slowly, without any hurry – which is how we all should be doing it, by the way!

Animals are instinctive that way. But then I’ve seen dogs gobble up their food!

I didn’t say all animals being relaxed that way 😀. Mostly it’s the herbivore animals that eat slowly.

Nice work, Anne! I think you caught the animals so well, and makes me glad to know the zoo can expand. Never having been to the Sacramento Zoo, you make me want to visit it and other places, too. NoCal has a lot to offer.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!

Thanks N! Northern California does have a lot to offer photographers. This zoo will be bigger and better, but we won’t be able to walk through it in an hour to two hours.

Please do. Unless you’ve all eaten them 😉

Don’t you just love zoo photography and getting up close with the ‘wild’ animals. They make good photography practice.
I haven’t been to the Melbourne Zoo in about 7 years now but used to go 1-2 times a week over a 3-year period. One black-capped capuchin monkey (a favourite) used to come up to the viewing window and touch my hand every visit.

Yes, Vicki, zoo animals give us photographers plenty of practice. And sometimes patience pays off.

Happy Thanksgiving Anne! I’m glad to hear the zoo is moving to somewhere with more room for the animals, as I don’t really like to see one as large as that rhino penned in. But your meerkat shot is fabulous!

Thanks Sarah! The Rhino enclosure is fairly large, but I’m sure he will be happier when he gets to his new habitat that’s more like the wild.

Nice animal pictures! White rhinos are amazingly large. I saw one recently at the Pittsburgh zoo and was amazed at its size. Thank you for all your wonderful pictures. Happy Thanksgiving!
